How to blend a cocktail

The Piña Colada is the most popular blended cocktail. A smooth, tropical cocktail with a nice rich texture. When it comes to blending a cocktail, it all about that smooth, rich texture. We tell you all about how to create the perfect blended cocktail in 6 easy steps.

When blending a cocktail with a home blender, it's best to use crushed ice instead of ice cubes. This is better for your blender. Blending a cocktail usually creates at least 50% dilution or more. The reason is, every single piece of ice that goes into the blender ends up in the glass.

If you like Piña Coladas..

Step 1: Add the ingredients to the blender cup.

Step 2: Add the crushed ice. If you’re not sure, put in less than you think you’ll need: you can always add more. Only use crushed ice. Some drinks use ice-cream instead of, or as well as, crushed ice.

Step 3: Put the cap on the blender cup, make sure it’s seated properly on the rotating unit, and turn it on at the lowest speed.

Step 4: Let the mixture churn for a while. It might jam up: stop the motor, take the blender cup off the motor unit and shake it to “burp” it – air bubbles can sometimes form.

Step 5: Listen to the noise the motor makes and look at the mixture. The goal is a smooth, consistent sound and an almost-solid mixture that is nonetheless moving smoothly around the blender cup with a small hole in the middle. If the hole is way too big, try adding small amounts of crushed ice. If the mixture is too solid, add an ounce or less of one of the non-alcoholic liquid ingredients. When you hear the “sweet sound”, let it blend for about 15 seconds more and then turn it off.

Step 6: Uncap the blender and pour the contents into the glass.

And now off the tropics!
