Sweet vermouth

30 ML

Angostura bitter

Pour all the ingredients into a stirring glass with ice. Stir the cocktail for about 20 seconds until it's nice and cold. Pour the Manhattan into the pre-chilled Martini glass and garnish the cocktail with a maraschino cherry placed inside the glass. 

  • Variation 1: Use rum as a base and turn your Manhattan into a Rum Manhattan.
  • Variation 2: A dash or bar spoon of Maraschino, Absinthe, Amaro, Anisette, Triple Sec, Amer Picon etc. instead of the Angostura Bitters often results in an interesting twist on the recipe. 
  • Variation 3: Replace the vermouth with a fortified wine such as Sherry, Port, Barolo Chinato or Americano.

The Manhattan is without a doubt one of the most legendary classic cocktails there is, and is up there with the likes of the Martini and the Old Fashioned. When it's made well, the Manhattan is a cocktail with a full-bodied, rich, intense and strong flavour.

The choice of vermouth dictates whether a Manhattan is a Sweet Manhattan (sweet vermouth), a Perfect Manhattan (dry and sweet vermouth) or a Dry Manhattan (dry vermouth).

The harmony between the full-bodied wood-aged Bols Genever or whiskey, preferably with a good amount of rye, and the sweet, complex, herbal vermouth is beautifully rounded out by the bitters. 

When the cocktail is stirred, it's nice and cold and has a remarkably light, syrupy texture. The Sweet Manhattan is a masculine cocktail and is known the world over as the go-to drink after a business deal or a long day at the office.
